"Busy
Bees" at a special dedication service,
The Mother Church, January 6, 1895
Longyear Museum Collection, P1484
In
1891, Maurine Campbell, a Christian Scientist in Boston,
organized the "Busy Bees." This group of children
raised money for a room for Mrs. Eddy in The Mother
Church and later for the flower fund. In 1898, Mrs.
Eddy requested the Busy Bees to disband, explaining,
"you should begin now to earn for a purpose even
higher, the money that you expend for flowers. You will
want it for academics, for your own school education,
or, if need be, to help your parents, brothers, or sisters"
(Miscellany, p. 216). She established a $4,000 trust
fund for them, to be distributed equally, with interest,
upon their becoming young adults.
