Counselors-in-training from Camps Newfound Owatonna in Harrison, Maine, walk up the driveway to the Mary Baker Eddy Historic House in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts.
Inside this historic house, the CITs learned about Mrs. Eddy’s activities while residing at 400 Beacon Street, including the founding of The Christian Science Monitor.
The tour included a stop outside Mrs. Eddy’s study.
The visitors also saw Mrs. Eddy’s personal sitting room. Here, she would invite members of the staff to discuss current events with her, or to sing and play music.
During the tour, the CITs heard about Irving Tomlinson’s work in Mrs. Eddy’s household and his love of photography. It is because of Mr. Tomlinson, and other members of the staff at 400 Beacon Street, that we have good visual records of Mrs. Eddy’s time in Chestnut Hill.
After touring this historic house, the CITs stopped by the Carriage House to see Mrs. Eddy’s carriages. Mrs. Eddy took a carriage ride each day after her noon meal.
The group then arrived at Longyear Museum for an afternoon of interactive experiences, including playing “Longyear Jeopardy!” in the Museum’s Portrait Gallery.
This interactive game included group work in a team setting.
A Longyear Museum intern hosted this lively game of “Longyear Jeopardy!” featuring contestants from Camps Newfound Owatonna in Harrison, Maine.
While visiting Longyear, the CITs participated in a scavenger hunt through the Museum’s three galleries, including The Patzlaff Gallery which features the Baker Family exhibit.
The Baker Family exhibit draws on the Museum’s extensive collection of documents and artifacts relating to Mary Baker Eddy’s family.
The Museum’s Daycroft Library was one of the stops for the CITs during their visit to Longyear Museum.
CITs from Camps Newfound Owatonna also explored the C. S. Harding Mott II Gallery at Longyear, which features the exhibit, “Mary Baker Eddy: A Spiritual Journey.”
This exhibit traces major events of Mrs. Eddy’s life, from her girlhood in rural New Hampshire to her founding of the Church of Christ, Scientist.
During their scavenger hunt, the CITs learned about Mrs. Eddy’s remarkable life history – a story of courage and triumph against tremendous odds.
