Trustees Announce New President and Executive Director of Longyear Foundation

February 21, 2012

The Trustees of Longyear Foundation are pleased to announce the appointment of Sandra J. Houston to the position of President and Executive Director of Longyear Foundation.

Longyear Board of Trustees Chairman Ellen Williams said Ms. Houston “brings a balance of the qualities, talents, and experience that are a perfect fit for Longyear. Her many years at the museum, a proven love for our mission, an understanding of the importance of our work, her expertise in museology, and her vast knowledge of Mrs. Eddy’s history are the qualities that made her the ideal candidate. We are pleased to have an Executive Director of such ability, dedication, and vision for Longyear’s future.”

Ms. Houston has served as Interim Executive Director of the Museum since May 2011. She joined the organization in 1998 as Manager of Development Activities. In 2000, she became the Director of Museum Activities. During her tenure at Longyear, Ms. Houston has been co-manager of the Museum’s eight Mary Baker Eddy Historic Houses, and has overseen the exterior restoration of seven of the houses. Ms. Houston has also coordinated Longyear’s annual Fall Tour of Mary Baker Eddy’s New England. She has been responsible for Museum Programs and Visitor Services.

Prior to joining the Longyear Museum staff, Ms. Houston worked for 15 years at the Alfred P. Sloan Museum in Flint, Mich. There she worked in the Education Department and oversaw special events and public relations.

Ms. Houston graduated from Principia College (Elsah, Ill.) with a B.A. in history. She has spent more than 25 years in the museum field. She is also an active member of professional museum associations, including the New England Museum Association and Museums of Boston.
