Longyear Museum President and Executive Director, Anne McCauley, was the keynote speaker for the National Leadership Council class retreat at the Adventure Unlimited Camp in Buena Vista, Colorado, on February 13. The theme for the weekend was "Honest Seekers for Truth," and the title of Anne's presentation was "Mary Baker Eddy: Seeker for Truth."
One-hundred twenty-five teenagers and fifty adults heard the hour-long presentation. Anne's talk made use of photographs from the Museum collection and quotations from Mrs. Eddy's writings, including Retrospection and Introspection and the preface to the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures. These elements illustrated events in Mrs. Eddy's life that prove her to be a "Seeker for Truth."
Anne introduced her remarks by saying, "For this talk I had the opportunity to draw from the resources of the Museum, but I want you to know that what I have prepared comes more from my heart. I have always been interested in learning about the life and work of our Leader. I grew up in the Boston area and my mother made sure that my siblings and I visited historic sites relating to Mrs. Eddy, including The Mother Church, Mount Auburn Cemetery, and the Mary Baker Eddy homes. These visits set in motion a lifelong interest in knowing our Leader on a deeper level. It was never about knowing her personality or her likes and dislikes. It was always about appreciating the trail she blazed for us - knowing the ups and downs, the fiery trials, and the perseverance as God's 'scribe under orders'" (Miscellaneous Writings, page 311).
The presentation included comments about several situations from Mrs. Eddy's life, and thoughts on what it takes to be a successful seeker for Truth. Anne also referenced Mrs. Eddy's statement on page 284 of Miscellaneous Writings, "Students who strictly adhere to the right, and make the Bible and Science and Health a study, are in no danger of mistaking their way."
The National Leadership Council is sponsored by DiscoveryBound. It is a multi-year servant leadership program, dedicated to fostering spiritual growth, leadership qualities, and a service perspective on life.
