Tours and Tea: Reaching Out to the Greater Boston Community

March 29, 2010

In this age of instant messaging, high-speed Internet, Kindle wireless readers, Twitter, Blackberries, and Facebook, the idea of an afternoon tea may seem quaintly out-of-date. But at Longyear Museum, such genteel events are a refreshing retreat from the hustle-bustle of today's world into a truly civilized form of sociability à la Jane Austen, and an apt means of celebrating Women's History Month - the month of March.

Recently, a group from the Brookline Senior Center visited Longyear for Tours and Tea. The afternoon began with a forty-minute guided tour of the Museum's main exhibit, "Mary Baker Eddy: A Spiritual Journey." The exhibit traces the major events of Mrs. Eddy's life, from her girlhood in rural New Hampshire to her founding of the Church of Christ, Scientist. Following the tour, the group gathered in Longyear's Heimer Garden Room, where tempting pastries and pots of tea - all beautifully laid out on a colorfully arranged table - awaited them. This room, with its floor-to-ceiling windows, looks out on the Museum's inner courtyard, where daffodils are just now peeking out of the ground. It's a beautiful, secluded spot in every season - the perfect setting for a tea party.

This past year, several came from points north, south, east, and west, including five retired professional ladies from Cambridge, Jamaica Plain, and Auburndale; seniors from two nearby facilities; a group of "Friends" of a public library twenty miles south of Boston; and local Longyear members.

This unique program remains available to Museum members and the general public every Monday at 2 p.m. and at other times by special arrangement. Reservations are required and are accepted until 11 a.m. the day of the tour. Tickets are $8 per person. For more information, please call 617.278.9000.
