In 1526, William Tyndale was the first to translate the Bible into English from the original Greek and Hebrew. Tyndale’s work formed the backbone of the King James Version of 1611.

William Tyndale: A Ploughman’s Talk was presented by Historian David Matthews at Longyear Museum on October 22, 2006. In his talk, Mr. Matthews followed Tyndale’s life from the dawn of the 16th century, through his education, his exile, his influence on the English Reformation and Protestantism, and the impact of his death by burning at the stake.

Mr. Matthews is a professional architect and avid historian, who lives in the Lake District of Northern England. He and his wife, Diana, reside on the shores of Lake Windermere in a historic house once occupied by the abolitionist William Wilberforce. An audio recording of Mr. Matthews’ talk is featured in the Vault.
