Young Pioneers Exhibit on Display at Principia College

May 10, 2010

Powerful lessons from some of the younger pioneers of the Christian Science movement are brought out in a Longyear Museum exhibit now on display at Principia College in Elsah, Illinois.  The exhibit is a gift to Principia from Longyear Museum.

The exhibit, Imparting a fresh impulse: Preparing the next generation, was unveiled at Principia College on Friday, April 23, 2010, after a talk by Longyear Director•Curator Stephen Howard and Senior Writer and Researcher Christopher Tyner. The new exhibit includes a pastel portrait of the Discoverer, Founder, and Leader of Christian Science, Mary Baker Eddy, and eleven photographs of students from her last class, held in November 1898. The exhibit title is derived from a statement by Mrs. Eddy to the class (see The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany, 244:11). According to Irving C. Tomlinson in his book Twelve Years with Mary Baker Eddy, Mrs. Eddy herself said that her work with that class "changed the character of the entire Field."

Their lives were transformed by Christian Science, and many were so moved by the freedom they found, that they committed themselves to serving the Cause of Christian Science. Information cards and a reading area near the exhibit provide viewers with opportunities for further study of the lives and work of the featured early workers.

The Principia College exhibit is located in the School of Government, directly across from the president's office, and adjacent to the offices of Student Life and Student Government. The exhibit will remain at the College through spring 2011.
