Camp counselors and counselors-in-training from Camps Newfound Owatonna in Harrison, Maine, explored Mary Baker Eddy’s spiritual journey during two recent visits to Longyear Museum. The camps, which serve young people who attend the Christian Science Sunday School, offered the field trips to better acquaint participants with Mrs. Eddy and early workers in the Christian Science movement.
On Sunday, June 20, approximately eighty camp counselors spent the afternoon visiting the three galleries and the library at Longyear. They experienced the Museum’s interactive exhibits and learned about some of the major events of Mrs. Eddy’s life, from her girlhood in rural New Hampshire to her founding of the Church of Christ, Scientist. The group watched “The Onward and Upward Chain,” a historical documentary produced by Longyear, and had cookies and lemonade in the Museum’s courtyard. Their visit was part of the Newfound Owatonna staff training program before the 2010 camp season began.
Longyear welcomed nearly thirty counselors-in-training from Camps Newfound Owatonna on Wednesday, July 7, for a full day of activities. The group toured the Mary Baker Eddy Historic House at 400 Beacon Street, where Mrs. Eddy resided when she founded The Christian Science Monitor. The visitors then arrived at the Museum where they participated in a scavenger hunt through the galleries followed by a lively game of “Longyear Jeopardy!” in the Portrait Gallery. The group then watched Longyear’s most recent historical documentary, “Who Shall Be Called: The Pleasant View Years,” before enjoying a taco dinner in the courtyard. The CITs also attended the evening testimony meeting at The Mother Church.
