JULIA S. BARTLETT,C.S.D.
Bedridden for seven years as a young adult, Julia Bartlett heard of Christian Science when she received a circular about it from a friend. She wrote for a copy of Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, and asked for help through prayer. Mrs. Eddy's husband, Asa G. Eddy, took her case and she began to improve immediately. She soon applied for Christian Science class instruction from Mrs. Eddy and her first class with Mrs. Eddy was in 1880, with more classes in 1882, 1884 and 1887. Miss Bartlett, originally from East Windsor, Connecticut, did some healing work there, but in 1881 moved to Boston where she established her practice at Mrs. Eddy's request. In 1884, she became a teacher of Christian Science, holding her first class that same year and her last class in 1922. She was appointed by Mrs. Eddy to the first Bible Lesson Committee in 1890. Miss Bartlett was also one of the original twelve First Members who met in Boston in 1892 to organize The First Church of Christ, Scientist.
