ALFRED FARLOW, C.S.D.
In about 1885, Alfred Farlow and five other members of his family
became interested in Christian Science. Janet Colman, a graduate
of Mary Baker Eddy's 1885 Normal class in Christian Science, taught
Mr. Farlow in March 1886. He then attended Mrs. Eddy's Primary
class in May 1887, her Normal class in October that year, and
another class with her in 1889. Mr. Farlow was one of twelve chosen
by Mrs. Eddy to address the Christian Science Congress of the
World's Parliament of Religions at the Chicago World's Fair in
1893. His defense of Christian Science in the press was well known
to Mrs. Eddy, and in January 1900, she appointed him the first
Manager of the Christian Science Committee on Publication. Under
his able organization, a network of Assistant Committees on Publication
in America and abroad was established. He received the C.S.D.
degree, or Doctor of Christian Science, in 1903, and in 1904 he
was elected President of The Mother Church. Following his retirement
as Committee on Publication in 1914, he continued his work as
a Christian Science practitioner and teacher in California.
