ANNIE MACMILLAN KNOTT, C.S.D.
Born in Scotland, and raised in Canada, Annie Macmillan Knott
lived in England from about 1878 to 1882. She then traveled to
Chicago where she first heard of Christian Science. After the
healing of her young son, Mrs. Knott turned wholly to the teachings
of Christian Science, and took Primary class instruction from
Bradford Sherman, a student of Mary Baker Eddy, in 1884. She moved
to Detroit in 1885 and took Christian Science classes from Mrs.
Eddy in 1887 and 1888 in Boston. When Sunday services were established
in Detroit, Mrs. Knott served as pastor until 1895, when the Bible
and Science and Health were ordained as dual pastor for
all Churches of Christ, Scientist, and Mrs. Knott became First
Reader. Between 1890 and 1898 Mrs. Knott represented the interests
of Christian Scientists and their need for protection to practice
in the state of Michigan. At one point she found herself addressing
the Legislature, with favorable results - Christian Scientists
received legal protection based on their constitutional right
to religious freedom.
