Scherenschnitte (scissor cutting) is the art of cutting continuous paper designs. The Swiss-German tradition began in the 1500s, and was brought to colonial America in the 1700s.
Each original Claudia Hopf scherenschnitte is a creative collaboration by Claudia, her husband, Carroll, and their son, Perry. Claudia begins by designing and drawing each scene; Perry executes the intricate cutwork; Claudia then paints and mounts the work on a black background. Finally, it receives one of Carroll's hand-painted wood frames.
Claudia is the author of four books on scherenschnitte. Her work hangs in the Library of Congress. It has been featured in exhibits and galleries across the U.S. and is represented in private collections in France, Germany, Switzerland, Africa, England, Australia, and Canada. The Hopf family lives in Kennebunk, Maine.
