Quilling is the art of paper scrolling, or rolling thin strips of paper to create beautiful and intricate images and designs.
The origin of quilling may go back to Ancient Egypt, but it became a popular art form in Europe in the 16th and 17th centuries. It spread to the American Colonies, especially New England, in the late 1700's and early 1800's. Paper became an inexpensive resource for this art form enjoyed primarily by women. Quilling was less popular during the late 1800's, but was then revived in the mid 1900's as the art form we enjoy today.
Needle-like instruments are now available for paper rolling, but historically feathers and quills were often used for this purpose.
