Mission

LONGYEAR MUSEUM is an independent historical museum dedicated to advancing the understanding of the life and work of Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer, Founder, and Leader of Christian Science.

Values

Longyear aspires to the highest expression of scholarship on the lifework of Mary Baker Eddy in a context that recognizes and values her spiritual discovery and work.

Longyear takes most seriously Mrs. Eddy’s admonition, “Mere historic incidents and personal events are frivolous and of no moment, unless they illustrate the ethics of Truth”
(Retrospection and Introspection, p. 21).

Longyear remains true to its identity as an independent historical institution. As such it does not take on pastoral functions nor teach Christian Science. Its programs should, however, inspire as well as educate.

Longyear values its collection as durable evidence for future generations and shares it through research, exhibits, historic sites, programs, and publications.

Longyear welcomes everyone and regards its primary audience as individuals of every age and background who appreciate the spiritual depth of Mary Baker Eddy’s life and the pioneering workers in Christian Science.

Longyear strives to provide an atmosphere of welcome and service and to be a safe haven for discovery, free from personal agendas.

Longyear treasures the fact that its trustees and staff strive to demonstrate Christian Science in their daily lives.
