A Talk on Mrs. Eddy and P. P. Quimby

May 04, 2018

7:00 pm

Mary Baker Eddy’s Encounter with Mental Healer P.P. Quimby and the Subsequent Controversy over the Origin of Metaphysical Healing: A conversation with Keith McNeil and Timothy Leech.

A giant chasm exists between Christian Science and spiritual healing as taught by Mary Baker Eddy and the theories and healing practice of Phineas P. Quimby. Mrs. Eddy’s connection to Quimby from 1862 – 1865 helped her to see the mental nature of disease, and might be considered part of her “gracious preparation” for the discovery of Christian Science, but in the end their ideas and methods diverged sharply. Mrs. Eddy’s association with Quimby had far-reaching consequences. From the 1880s onwards, those who sought to discredit her as the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science alleged that she had stolen her healing system from Quimby—a false allegation that persists to this day amongst scholars of nineteenth-century American religious history.

Keith "Skip" McNeil has been a collector of rare books and manuscripts on Christian Science since 1975. He is the author of A Story Untold: A History of the Quimby-Eddy Debate.

Timothy Leech has worked at Longyear Museum and The Mary Baker Eddy Library.  He recently completed his PhD in American History from Ohio State University.
