Biography
SARAH J. CLARK’s life changed dramatically after hearing Mary Baker Eddy speak in Boston in December 1884. She had sought Christian Science treatment for hopeless invalidism, which brought some relief, but full healing came while she listened to Mrs. Eddy that day. Sarah went on to take two classes back to back with Mrs. Eddy at the Massachusetts Metaphysical College—Primary and Normal courses—in September and October the following year, after which she worked in Jamestown, New York, to establish the Cause of Christian Science. In 1887, she went to Toledo, Ohio, to help do the same. That summer, Miss Clark taught a class and obtained a charter for the Toledo Christian Science Institute. In March 1889, she formed the association of her students, under whose auspices a Reading Room was opened, and in April Sunday services began, with Sarah as pastor. In the fall of 1890, Sarah Clark was called to Boston by the Christian Science Publishing Society to edit The Christian Science Journal, where she remained until December 1891. Additionally, from the summer of 1907 to the spring of 1908, she was a member of Mrs. Eddy’s household.
