Amesbury Days Open House

Earlier this summer, the Mary Baker Eddy Historic House in Amesbury, Massachusetts, welcomed visitors to a special open house as part of the town’s popular annual Amesbury Days event.

Despite the drizzly weather, turnout was robust. On learning that the house dates to 1780, one of the youngest guests, a lively second grader named Jasper, did the math and announced proudly to his tour group that the house is 245 years old!

Indeed it is. The property, which is the oldest in Longyear’s collection, has recently undergone an extensive restoration. Tours throughout the day highlighted this work, and more importantly, introduced visitors to Mrs. Eddy and her sojourns here in 1868 and 1870, during which time she was healing, searching the Scriptures, writing down her findings, and teaching some of her first students.

Additionally, Victorian era games such as fox and geese and tiddlywinks were on offer under a tent on the lawn for families and children.
