The Earl of Dunmore, C.S.B.

Portrait by Allan G. Cram. Original Longyear Collection.

Biography

THE EARL OF DUNMORE (Charles Adolphus Murray, seventh Earl of Dunmore), was a noted hunter, traveler, explorer, and author of books on India and Central Asia. He was a distinguished officer in the British Army and also served Queen Victoria as a lord-in-waiting. A few years after he witnessed his wife’s healing in 1892, he sought Christian Science treatment for himself. It was at this point, when a leading London surgeon pronounced his condition incurable, that he wholeheartedly accepted the teachings of Christian Science. He asked a member of his family for help and in five weeks was completely healed.

In 1901, Lord and Lady Dunmore and their two daughters, Lady Victoria and Lady Mildred, had Normal class under the Christian Science Board of Education at the invitation of Mrs. Eddy. Queen Victoria and her son, later King Edward VII, were both aware of Lord and Lady Dunmore’s devotion to Christian Science.
