Biography
JOSEPH G. MANN was accidentally shot in the heart in his early twenties. Physicians pronounced the injury fatal, but a Christian Scientist who was visiting Broad Brook, Connecticut, where the Mann family lived, heard of the accident and offered Christian Science treatment. Joseph was at the point of death when this prayerful treatment commenced, and a complete recovery occurred. Two years later, in 1888, Mr. Mann studied with Mrs. Eddy at the Massachusetts Metaphysical College, and shortly thereafter entered the public practice of Christian Science. While visiting his brothers in Junction City, Kansas, he helped organize church services and taught a class (John Salchow was one of his pupils). In 1898, Mr. Mann was invited to attend Mrs. Eddy’s last class, held in Concord, New Hampshire. At that time, he heard of the need for additional helpers at Pleasant View and volunteered his services to Mrs. Eddy “in whatever capacity she might see fit to use” him. Stepping aside from his practice, he became superintendent of the Pleasant View estate. After several years of service, Joseph returned to Connecticut, settling in New Britain, where he resumed his practice and began teaching Christian Science.
