Note: For a more comprehensive look at Mrs. Eddy’s time in this house, please consider our general tour.
On Jan. 26, 1908, the Discoverer of Christian Science, Mary Baker Eddy, moved from Concord, New Hampshire, to her residence in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts. As Mrs. Eddy set out to make the house into a comfortable home for her staff and herself, she took some time to walk through the rooms and choose the specific placement of the pictures, sculptures, and ornaments—many of which were gifts from grateful students of Christian Science. Mrs. Eddy valued each work for its subject and the spirit it expressed. The art in her house reflected her own thoughts and feelings and documented significant events in her history.
This tour looks at 15 pieces of art in Mrs. Eddy’s final residence. In addition to learning something about the artist, the medium, and how the various pieces came to be in this house, guides will share some of the deeper meaning behind the art, and the way in which Mrs. Eddy viewed such works as contributing to the atmosphere of her home.
